Two brothers, Dereck and Norman Furguson, were on a car trip through Scotland and were returning to their home in Annan. In true form, it was just before midnight, and the deserted road would have taken 15 minutes to travel under normal circumstances. It took nearly twice that in the end.

The first of the appearances looked like some sort of white bird that was heading straight for the windsheild of the car. Dereck, who was driving, swerved to avoid the thing, but it vanished just before impacting the car. This was just the start. Soon after, the shade of a crazed old woman rushed the car - again vanishing before the inevitable crash.

This was only the start of an endless series of figures that literally hurled themselves at the car from all sides. All had the same vanishing act. Cats, dogs, wildcats, and human or sort of-human figures loomed into view. The figures, although spectral, were so frightening that Dereck swerved to avoid every one. Meanwhile, the temperature inside the car dropped to below normal levels. Some force seemed to be intent on gaining control of the steering wheel while evil, cackling laughter emanated from inside the car. Dereck later recalled that he was certain that, if the car were to swerve off the road, a fatal crash would be inevitable.

Once, the car was stopped, and it sounded as if millions of fists were striking the outside of the car repeatedly. This sound was inaudible outside the car. Laughter continued to ring out through the night air.

Near the end of the journey, two red lights loomed up ahead in the road - the taillights of a truck. However, the truck appeared to be approaching the car too quickly, and a crash seemed to be imminent. The truck, too, vanished.

Eventually, the two reached Annan safely. It was later learned that witchcraft was practiced in the area long ago - in addition to a more recent fatal truck crash.
