Ms. E was a fairly level-headed middle aged woman when she rented an apartment on twenty-ninth street in New York City, intelligent and not prone to hallucinations. When she left it some time later, she was in a somewhat different state of mind.

The room is on the twelfth floor of a hotel for women only, and may still be there today. The first manifestation that she noticed immediately on entering was a foul odor, like something dead. She was on the verge of asking for another room but, so as not to create a problem for anybody, decided to stay a few nights. On the wall there was a spot that was lighter than all the rest, as if something had hung there for a very long time. It was in the shape of a cross.

The supernatural abuse began that same night. While in bed, Ms. E clearly heard the sound of a newspaper being rustled, as if the page were being turned. Then, footsteps started at the chair at the foot of her bed and walked towards the door. Switching on the light, Ms. E found herself quite alone.

She requested that the room be fumigated due to the persistent dead odor the next day, but nobody came. Days turned into weeks.

Ms E. got the impression that the ghost was an old woman who resented others trying to live in what she still considered 'her' apartment. Determined to stay in her apartment, Ms. E fought back with all her will against the presence. What had began as a routine haunting was turning into a paranormal war.

One night while lying awake in bed, Ms. E. suddenly saw two very thin but strong arms holding a downy pillow above her head, as if to suffocate her. it took all her strength to fight the ghostly assailant off. Amazingly, she continued to live in the apartment until the 6 month mark came, at which point she was struck in the back of the neck by an invisible object and, as a result, became paralyzed in bed. Somehow, she managed to get to the phone and call for help.

Over the next few days she was examined and her test results indicated excellent health. The pain and resulting paralysis had no logical origin. Ms. E moved out immediately, and did not return to New York for about a year. When she did, living in another apartment, only then did she learn the truth.

In the room in which she occupied, the former two owners had been found dead inside the room. The first was found floating dead in the bathtub, and the one after her was found dead in a chair.
